To automatically export conversation data — such as the contact's name, channel, message text and assigned agent — to Google Sheets, use the Papo (https://papo.global/) Flows module to create an automation with a new conversation trigger and a webhook action. The webhook sends the data to a URL prepared in Google Sheets through an automation platform (Zapier, Make) or a Google Apps Script.
This integration eliminates manual collection of support metrics and keeps a spreadsheet always up to date with every interaction that comes into your inboxes. With the data centralized, you can build dashboards in Google Sheets or Looker Studio to track volume per channel, peak hours, agent workload and much more.
Integration overview
| Step | Where it happens | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Prepare the destination | Google Sheets + intermediary | Create the spreadsheet and generate a webhook URL with Zapier, Make or Google Apps Script. |
| 2. Create the trigger | Papo (Flows) | Define the "New conversation" event (or "Message received") to start the automation. |
| 3. Configure the webhook | Papo (Flows) | Add the webhook action with the destination URL and the JSON body containing the conversation data. |
| 4. Receive and log | Google Sheets | The URL receives the payload and inserts a new row into the spreadsheet with the conversation information. |
| 5. Build dashboards | Google Sheets / Looker Studio | Use the accumulated data to generate charts for volume, conversion per channel, agent performance and more. |
How it works – step by step
1. Prepare Google Sheets to receive the data
Papo does not generate the Google Sheets URL. You need to create an endpoint that receives the JSON sent by the webhook and writes the data to the spreadsheet. The two most common ways are:
Option A – No-code automation platform (recommended)
Tools such as Zapier or Make let you create a "Catch Webhook", which generates a unique URL. Then you add an action to "Add Row" in Google Sheets, mapping the received fields to the spreadsheet columns. This option requires no programming and handles authentication with Google.
Option B – Google Apps Script
In Google Sheets, go to Extensions > Apps Script, paste code with a doPost(e) function that parses the JSON and inserts the data. Deploy it as a "Web app" with access set to "Anyone" and copy the generated URL. This alternative gives you more control, but requires basic knowledge of JavaScript.
2. Create the Flow in Papo with the right trigger
Go to the Flows module in the Papo dashboard and create a new automation.
- Trigger: choose the "New conversation" event so the webhook fires whenever a contact starts a conversation in an inbox. If you prefer to capture each message individually, use the "Message received" trigger and, if needed, apply filters (by channel, keyword, etc.).
- Inbox: select the desired inbox (WhatsApp, Instagram, email, etc.) to limit sending to conversations from that channel only.
3. Configure the webhook action
Add a Webhook step and fill in:
- URL: paste the address generated in Zapier, Make or Apps Script.
- Method: keep it as
POST. - Body: define the JSON with the conversation variables you want to export. Example:
{
"contact_name": "{{contact.name}}",
"channel": "{{inbox.name}}",
"message_text": "{{message.text}}",
"agent": "{{agent.name}}",
"event_date": "{{timestamp}}"
}
The available variables can be found in the Flows module documentation. If the destination system requires specific headers (such as Content-Type: application/json or authentication tokens), add them in the headers field.
4. Test and activate the Flow
Before going live, run a test:
- Temporarily replace the destination URL with a test URL (e.g.: Webhook.site).
- Start a conversation in the configured inbox.
- Check that the payload arrives correctly, with all the expected fields and values.
- Replace it with the final URL and activate the Flow.
From that moment on, every new conversation (or message, depending on the trigger) will be automatically logged in your Google Sheets spreadsheet.
Who this integration is useful for
- Data and BI analysts who need to consolidate support metrics without manual exports.
- Operations managers who want dashboards showing conversation volume per channel, peak hours and agent workload.
- Marketing and sales teams who want to cross-reference conversation data with campaigns and funnels in the CRM.
- Companies that already use Google Sheets as an information hub and want to feed it automatically with support data.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code to set up the webhook?
Not necessarily. With Zapier or Make, the integration is built without code. Only the Google Apps Script option requires basic knowledge of JavaScript.
Is the data sent in real time?
Yes. As soon as the trigger configured in the Flow fires (e.g.: new conversation), the webhook sends the data immediately to the configured URL.
What information can I send to Google Sheets?
You can send the contact's name, source channel, message text, assigned agent, date/time and other variables available in the Flow. Check the Flows module documentation to see all the options.
Can I test before activating the Flow?
Yes. We recommend using a test URL (such as Webhook.site) to validate the sending before pointing it to the final Google Sheets.
Does Papo provide the webhook URL?
No. The URL must be created in Zapier, Make or Google Apps Script. Papo only sends the data to the configured address.
Can I export conversation data from specific channels?
Yes. When configuring the trigger in the Flow, you can select the desired inbox (WhatsApp, Instagram, email, etc.) so that only conversations from that channel fire the webhook.
